I think that authentic assessment is much more useful in evaluating the students' knowledge than traditional assessment. I also think that the students will learn a lot more if they are being assessed in an authentic way because they will have to use higher order thinking. Authentic assessment encourages higher order thinking because the students have to go beyond just choosingt the correct answer from a list. They must use their critical thinking skills to solve real world problems.
I believe that education needs to focus more attention to modern ideas of assessment; with authentic assessment teachers can effectively rate students’ performance to better evaluate the students’ progress and to evaluate the teacher’s success with presenting the material. Authentic assessment can be varied to meet individual learners’ needs accommodating to the specific needs of various assignments. When students are prompted to use their prior knowledge when learning they are more likely to retain the information, therefore the learning processes will be successful.
I am personally not a huge fan of standardized testing because I know im not a good test taker... this allows for a student show that they have learned all the information but present it in a different form. This will encourage higher order thinking.
I believe that authentic assessment is a better way of assessing than traditional assessment. It provides the students with real-life situations and encompasses procedural tasks in which the students must complete. The students are also more inclined to remember authentic assessments rather than traditional. However, authentic assessments are time-consuming. The criteria in which to evaluate the students on during authentic assessment is also an issue. This is why traditional assessment is still the majority of assessing used in schools.
I like authentic assessment a lot more than traditional assessment. With the traditonal assessment, it's hard for students to express themselves. They're pretty much told what to do, and so it's hard for them to make decisions for themselves and have kind of a free range with their education. Authentic assessment encourages higher order thinking because the students get to solve real world problems. They get to do something besides pick the correct answer. They can reflect themsevles in their work.
I think that authentic assesment is extremely important because then it levels the playing field. Some peopel are just better at hands on tests. I feel that this kind of assessment encourages a different of learning which is equally important. It is essentail taht studenst will be able to do things with their hands and not just on a piece of paper. It really opens up teh classroom and allows for their to be some diversity of activities.
I agree...but all students have different experiences and haven't experienced somethings that others have. Would authentic assessment then work if you were on a specific subject in the case where some of you students didn't experience anything in that subject?
If it were possible to do all of my assessments in my classroom based on authentic assessment I totally would. It is such a more fun, interactive, and creative way to see how much of the material students understand. It is a great way to expect higher order thinking skills from students and use more real life examples within the assessment.
Authentic assessment is one of the best practices that can be used. Students are required to think more critically and that is what is needed the most.
